WESTconsin Credit Union Celebrates International Credit Union Day

WESTERN WI— On October 15, 2020, credit union members around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day®, an annual event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements. This year’s theme “Inspiring Hope for a Global Community” marks the event’s 72nd anniversary. More than 85,000 credit unions exist globally, serving more than 274 million members in 118 countries worldwide. Credit unions exist to help people, not make a profit. As a not-for-profit cooperative, WESTconsin Credit Union is owned and operated by and for its members.

Founded in 1939, WESTconsin’s Credit Union was created to primarily serve the Menomonie area agricultural community, then operating as Menomonie Farmers Credit Union. Membership expanded over the next several years and merged with other small credit unions in the region. In the summer of 1990, this growth was recognized by changing the organization’s name to WESTconsin’s Credit Union. Today, WESTconsin’s field of membership footprint includes twenty-six counties across west central Wisconsin and east central Minnesota.

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, credit unions around the globe have continued to provide a high level of service to their members and demonstrated a generosity to their local communities. To aid their members, WESTconsin Credit Union updated several policies to provide financial relief to members facing hardship during COVID-19. Additionally, in April the credit union donated $45,000 to food pantries and collected money in August from employees and members to give back to local schools.

To celebrate International Credit Union Day, WESTconsin Credit Union is hosting an online giveaway for a “Chillin' with a WESTconsin” gift package and the opportunity to choose community partners to receive $25 from WESTconsin. Additionally, WESTconsin will be hosting Free Community Shred Events at four of their community offices.  Visit WESTconsincu.org for more information on these events.

WESTconsin Credit Union has been serving members since 1939, and membership is open to anyone who lives or works in the Wisconsin counties of Barron, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau, and Washburn, or the Minnesota counties of Anoka, Chisago, Dakota, Goodhue, Isanti, Ramsey, Wabasha, and Washington, with a $5 minimum deposit in a Membership Savings Account. Credit unions are financial institutions owned by their accountholders, and member funds are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) up to at least $250,000.
