Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Protecting Your Personal Information Online

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

At WESTconsin, we take the security of your personal and financial information seriously, and we believe it’s important you know how to safeguard your information. While cyber threats and scams may seem like something you have little control over, there are simple, effective ways to keep your data secure online.

Tips for Better Online Security

  • Be aware of common scams to avoid
    • Fraudsters often use emails or text messages to pose as legitimate companies or your financial institution to try and steal your personal information. Whether the request comes through a phone call, email, or text, take a moment to think before responding, clicking a link, or opening an attachment.
  • Use strong, unique passwords
    • Strong passwords are long, include a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters, and are different for every account. Since remembering multiple unique passwords can be challenging, consider using a password manager to safely store them so you only have to remember one strong master password.
  • Use multifactor authentication whenever available
    • This extra layer of security helps prevent access to your accounts, even if your username or password is compromised. Whenever possible, complete the extra verification step by receiving a code to your phone, email, or an authenticator app.
  • Review your information regularly
    • Regularly monitor your accounts so you can quickly identify when something doesn’t look right and take the necessary steps to correct it. In addition to monitoring your accounts, reviewing your credit report each year for unexpected or suspicious activity can help protect you from identity theft.
  • Be cautious of unexpected messages
    • A tactic frequently used by fraudsters is to instill fear and urgency to trick people into sharing information before they have time to think. Be cautious of any unexpected messages or requests for personal information, especially from someone you don’t know. Always stop and verify that the source is legitimate before taking action or giving out any information.
  • Protect your devices
    • Keep your software up to date and protect sensitive information stored on your phones and computers. Installing updates as soon as they’re available helps fix security flaws and better protect your personal information.

Fraudsters look for easy opportunities, but building simple, everyday habits that protect your information can make it much harder for them to succeed. Even with good habits and protections in place, cyber incidents can happen to anyone.
